Alejandro Garnacho has revealed his new squad number at Manchester United, with 17 being taken due to a link with his hero Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 19-year-old winger has never been shy in showing his respect for former Red Devils icon Ronaldo. At one point, there was talk of giving the young Argentine his idol’s No. 7 jersey, which he proudly wore at Old Trafford throughout his formative years.

That shirt has, however, been passed to summer signing Mason Mount, leaving Garnacho to look elsewhere. He has donned No.49 since making a senior breakthrough with United, but his brother had teased at a change being made when posting a picture of Ronaldo wearing 17 for Portugal.

It is now official that Garnacho will wear the uniform in 2023–2024. Andy Cole, Fred, and Nani, among others, have all worn United’s No. 17 in the past.

Garnacho, who has made 38 competitive appearances for United and scored five goals, is vying with players like Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Antony for playing time this season in wide attacking positions.
