'She was deeply devoted to her deen'

Grief is high amongst Nigerians in Canada, following the death of one of their own Rodiyat Alabede who died donating blood.

This is even as Canadian health authorities have launched an investigation into the death of the 22-year old Nigerian student, Rodiyat following plasma donations at private collection centres in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Hers was one of the latest deaths in connection with plasma donation, first in October 2025 and another on January 30, 2026.

Reports indicate that the two deaths were at clinics run by Grifols, a Spanish healthcare firm that operates multiple plasma collection centres across Canada.

While the authorities dig in to unravel the circumstances and those culpable, humanitarian nationals have launched an appeal, on GoFundMe, a non-profit fund raising platform.

The platform’s appeal on Rodiyat Alabede reads as follows:

Rody, as most of us fondly called her, was a student at the University of Winnipeg, expected to graduate next year. She was an international student who came to Canada with hopes and dreams of making a difference. Rody aspired to become a social worker, dedicating her life to helping others, a dream she was so close to achieving.

Rody was known for her kindness, compassion, and unwavering faith. She was deeply devoted to her deen and always carried herself with grace, warmth, and sincerity. Far from home, her friends here in Winnipeg became her family, and her loss has left a deep void in our hearts and community.

We, her friends and community here, are doing everything we can to make this possible to lay her to rest. The funds raised will go toward funeral and burial expenses, as well as supporting the necessary arrangements for her family.

We humbly ask for your support whether through a donation, sharing this campaign, or keeping Rody in your prayers. Every contribution, no matter the amount, brings us closer to giving her the farewell she deserves.

May Allah grant Rodiyat mercy, forgive her sins, and bless her with the highest place in Jannah.
