Finidi George Appointed As Interim Super Eagles Coach

The former Super Eagles winger, Finidi George has been selected as the interim head coach for the March international friendlies by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

After parting ties with Jose Peseiro, who guided Nigeria to an Africa Cup of Nations silver medal, Nigeria has been without a regular coach since February.

As Peseiro’s deputy, Finidi George has been given temporary leadership of the national team.

The Super Eagles’ international friendlies against Ghana on March 22 and Mali in Morocco four days later will be managed by the 52-year-old.

George has already started work preparing for the international friendly matches.

“Coach George Finidi has held a meeting with Super Eagles team officials as he leads the Super Eagles’ international friendlies against Ghana and Mali,” the Nigeria Football Federation announced in a brief statement.

For George, the next friendlies have great importance, as he was among the over 20 applicants vying for the Super Eagles position.

He could be given consideration for the permanent position if he shows well by defeating rivals Ghana and Mali.

In the event that George is hired as the Nigerian coach, his first competitive match will be a June 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Bafana Bafana.

While playing Ghana and Mali, the Super Eagles will be missing a few important players.

The absence of injured players Taiwo Awoniyi and Victor Osimhen, as well as Tyronne Ebuehi and Gabriel Osho of Luton Town, will be something Finidi George is hoping won’t interfere with his attempt to make an impression on NFF bosses.
