FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria Zooms Into Semi Final

Nigeria today zoomed into the semi-final of the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup when its team, the Flamingos counterparts USA 4-3 on penalty shootout.

The match was played in Mumbai, India.

Agency report indicates that Flamingos opened the scorer’s sheet in the 27th minute through a penalty from Edafe Omamuzo after Amina Bello was fouled in the box.

Thereafter, there was a swing of play, with the Americans taking over proceedings..

This enabled them to level up scores in the 40th minute through Amalica Villarreal after a deflection from defender Comfort Folorunsho.

The first half ended in a 1-1 draw.

The continued their dominance of play upon the resumption of game but could not find the net until the regulation time lapsed, with game ending 1-1.

Four minutes additional time for a possible late scoring from both teams but they both failed to utilised their scoring chances.

Both teams thus settled for penalties, with Flamingos scoring the first three kicks while the US missed one out of their three.

Folorunsho missed Nigeria’s fourth kick but Flamingos goalkeeper denied the Americans before Omamuzo sealed the semi-final ticket for Nigeria.

The Nigeria Flamingos are the first team to get through to the semi finals of the U-17 Women’s World Cup in India.

NAN reports that this is the first ever Flamingos qualify for the semi final since they started participate in the world cup.

The Nigeria’s Flamingos with meet the winner of the second quarter finals between Tanzania and Colombia in their first ever semi final of the world cup.

The 2022 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup which started on Tuesday is to end on Oct. 30.
