Fear On Campus As Police Diffuse Bomb Nearby

There is fear on campus following the diffusing of a bomb near its gate. The Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was discovered at the entrance of the University of Maiduguri on Monday.

Though there was no reported loss of life, and the Police Command in Borno State said it successfully diffused the IED.

However, The Eagle understands that there in fear on campus especially given that the source and reason for the incident are yet to be ascertained.

The Police Command in Borno State said it successfully diffused the IED, according to information that was given by the Borno State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso.

Speaking to journalists on the incident today, Daso said the command upon discovering the IED swiftly deployed men of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team to the scene.

He said the bomb was a fabricated Improvised Explosive Device (IED), adding:

“In swift response, the Command’s Explosive Ordinance Department (EOD) swung into action and successful diffused the IED, without loss of lives or property,” he said.

According to the police spokesman, his men had begun investigating the matter, and had warned members of the public to be on the alert.

Bomb incidents are not a new phenomena in Maiguguri, especially given the activities of the banned Boko Haram insurgency that actually took strong roots in the North East of the country.

In one incident in October 2017,  the Police Command in Borno a multiple bomb incident claimed the lives of 16 people and injured 18 others.

The State Police Commissioner, Damian Chukwu, who sent a text message to journalists on the incident, said a male suicide bomber detonated an explosive device in a crowded area, killing 13 people and wounding five others.

Informing that the command had started investigation the incident, he urged residents to report any suspicious objects or persons to the nearest security outfit nearest to them to avert loss of lives and properties.

The State Police Commissioner, Damian Chukwu, who sent a text message to journalists on the incident, said a male suicide bomber detonated an explosive device in a crowded area, killing 13 people and wounding five others.

He said two other female suicide bombers also detonated Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) strapped to their bodies and injured 13 persons.
