FA Set To Assess Relevant Information Around Sheffield United Player’s Death 

The FA has stated that they will “assess the relevant information” regarding Maddy Cusack, a player for Sheffield United, passing away.

September of last year saw the death of Cusack, who was 27 years old. Sheffield United started an external probe while an inquest into her death was opened and postponed until the following month. The probe revealed in December that there was no proof of misconduct by any club personnel; nonetheless, the FA will now carry out its own investigation.

As per The Guardian, an official statement from an FA Spokesperson read: “We were devastated to learn of the passing of Maddy Cusack last September and our thoughts continue to be with her family and loved ones at this very difficult time. Following the conclusion of the club’s independent investigation into the matter, we felt that it would be appropriate to assess the relevant information of the case. This is to understand whether or not any further action is required under our jurisdiction within football, and to establish what, if any, next steps may be appropriate. We are in dialogue with Maddy’s family and the club during this process.”

The FA’s announcement follows The Athletic’s publication of the specifics of the seven-page grievance that Cusack’s family submitted following her passing. Numerous complaints from Cusack’s final seven months with the team, which coincided with Jonathan Morgan’s hiring as head coach, are included in the report. Prior to his return to work earlier this month, Morgan had taken a leave of absence during the independent investigation that was conducted in October.

Cusack, who joined Sheffield United in 2019, became the first female player to play 100 games for the team. Following her untimely death, memorial services were held at football venues around the nation, including at Sheffield United men’s games and England’s match against Scotland.
