   Residents Lament Over Poor Waste Disposal Method

   Residents of Thomas Salako Street Yaya Abatan Ogba Lagos, have complained about the poor sanitary condition of the state and the silence of the agencies involved in the exercise.

   The stench from the refuse welcomes visitors into the community. Rotten food and crop items from the market, bottles, plastics, domestic wastes, and assorted refuse are gathered in the heap, and cart pushers dart to and fro the location as they make brisk business.

   A resident disclosed that this dirt is often dumped late in the night around 11 pm. This uncontrolled and indiscriminate dumping of refuse has caused a dirty and littered environment including stench from open dumpsites.

   According to Agatha Chukwuemeka, a resident of Thomas Salako street, “As you dey see am, you don see am the way e be, the dirty wey dey hear dem no wan pack am and we don beg government say make dem pack am or make dem put law make dem sanction people wey dey thruway dirty for there.

   Dem see say na transformer dey there nobody wan hear dem dey always thruway dirty for there. We don even beg the government and they no listen to us, nobody wan come to check the place out. I dey beg una ooooh if una fit help us beg government make dem come check am out make dem comot all this dirty put sanction we go dey happy ooooh”.

   A shop owner in the area who pleaded anonymity said,” My problem is that I sell food in Thomas Salako bus stop, and the dirt that they’re always dumping on the road is not even conducive for my customers it’s not even safe because of the food, sometimes I might open my cooler down when I want to sell food the way fliers perch on the dirt, also used to perch on my food and its not even good for the health of my customers.

   I will appreciate it because we have spoken to the government and they are not doing anything about it even the people there that are coming to dump the dirt we have spoken to them but they’re not listening so, we will appreciate it if something can be done about it very fast thank you”.

   Undoubtedly, the improper management of waste had caused an increase in sanitation-related diseases and flood disasters. The adverse effects of improper waste disposal include air, soil, and water contamination and the spread of airborne diseases which affect humans and animals.

   This equally calls for serious incremental review on the part of governments at all levels to help confront the challenges of ensuring a cleaner and safer environment.”

   Other safe methods of waste disposal include plasma gasification, incineration, waste compaction, biogas generation, composting, and vermicomposting among others. Some environmentalists have called for a nationwide practice of proper waste management.

   Should The Presidency go to the North in 2023 Again?

   It is disturbing that some top politicians, for obvious selfish reasons, are trying to jettison the much- desired rotation of the Presidency between the north and the south. Since the advent of democracy in 1999, it has been an acceptable political tradition.

   Though it is not expressly written in our constitution, it has become a convention, just like the unwritten British constitution. The nearest constitutional provision is the federal character clause. It was meant to give all parts of our highly diverse country a sense of belonging.

   It was the same rationale that informed the decision to zone the Presidency to the southwest in 1999. In 1993, Chief M.K.O Abiola won the presidential election very convincingly. He was unjustly denied the trophy. This infuriated most Nigerians, particularly the Yoruba, his ethnic group. In order to assuage their anger , two of their kinsmen, General Olusegun Obasanjo and Chief Olu Falaye, were deliberately given the tickets of the major political parties.

   Nigeria is heterogeneous. This is a fact. So, the office of the President of Nigeria should rotate between the North and the South to promote unity and a sense of belonging. In the spirit of Federal Character and fair play, that office should be occupied by a southerner for another eight years, effective 2023. It is also a resolution influenced by the peculiarities of this country.

   Muhammadu Buhari, a northerner, has been Nigeria’s President since 2015, winning the election in 2019 for a second term in office which yielded no positive result.

   Buhari’s regime was low in all aspects ranging from the worsening security, corruption to the sorry state of the nation’s economy.

   For more than 47 years since Nigeria Independence, the Presidency from the Northern part of the Country has not really favored Nigerians.

   Nigerians can’t afford another Buhari president. Voting him in was the biggest mistake of our lives. He’s not only a disappointment to the north but also to the entire country as a whole.

   The unity of Nigeria has never been so threatened as it is now. That is the more reason the voters must be careful in taking decisions that would further weaken our bonds of unity. There have been strident complaints over the years in the South and the Middle Belt about the Hausa/ Fulani domination of the country. It has even degenerated to an abysmal level that Nnamdi Kanu, an Igbo activist, and Sunday Igboho, a Yoruba irredentist , have, respectively, been spearheading the agitation for the secession of their ethnic groups from Nigeria.

   Nigerian unity is definitely negotiable and must be re-negotiated for it to stand or survive the test of time. The reality over the years remains that in spite of the best efforts of all our leaders past or present, Nigerian unity is not guaranteed.

   The control of the presidency has mostly been done by the north and they used this power to create a fraudulent constitution in Nigeria, fraudulent population in the Northwest and more states in the North. These fraudulent activities can be corrected if we all stand together to vote all Northerners out.

   With the calamity that the Buhari presidency has posed to Nigeria, it will be more calamitous to have Tinubu as his successor. Governing Nigeria is not all about identifying surrogates who will man critical political offices for future political gains. Nigeria needs a cerebral, healthy, comparatively morally overboard president, a man, borrowing from Oscar Wilde’s description of his gay partner friend, Sir Alfred Douglas in De Profundis, who is not a man for whom the gutters and all that is in it fascinates.

   The fate of Nigeria, as a united entity, is hanging precariously on the balance, should be of serious concern to us all. We should all vote wisely because having a northern president can never favor Nigeria.

   Nigeria needs to be reconstructed. The legacy of Reconstruction would be revived during the civil rights movement of the 1960s, The security situation across Nigeria remains dreadful. We all need to fight for the political, economic and social equality that had long been denied to us.

   True lovers of this country must jealously protect and defend rotation at all political levels. It is our pride, the strength of our country, booster of our unity and the tonic sustaining our democracy. Power rotation is well-intentioned and aimed at giving every Nigerian a sense of belonging. Any northern politician that truly loves this country should not be talking about running for the office of the President in 2023. Arise all compatriots, let’s build a united, peaceful and just country with power rotation.
