Don’t Weep For This Edifice, Dethroned By Cocoa House, Now…

Do you know this former tallest edifice in Ibadan, the capital of former Western Region, before the coming of Cocoa House?

If you a little familiar with history of the former Western region, with its capital in Ibadan, current capital of Oyo State, you will certainly know which building we are referring to: Well, that is Cooperative House, yes the tallest in the town before Cocoa House toppled it in I965.

That edifice known as Cooperative Building was constructed in 1953 and rode the waves of fame right on.

It was significant because it marked the beginning of modern high rise architecture in the state and held the title of the most outstanding until the completion of Cocoa House, which later became the tallest structure in Ibadan and West Africa.

This building is a 10 storey building structure which has served its purpose as at the time it was constructed and opened, and even beyond.

Now, however, it has seen better days, to put it patronisingly, no kudos to the maintance slack in the management of public infrastructure down here.

However, both Buildings remain historic commercial buildings, located in the Dugbe area of the ancient city of Ibadan, itself famed as West Africa’s largest city.
