Dangerous Drugs Are Flooding The North East, Worsening Terrorism

Dangerous drugs are flooding the North East region of Nigeria, worsening the problem of terrorism in the area.

Such dangerous drugs are now being consumed by undergraduates, secondary school students, youth, commercial bus drivers and sex workers among others.

These and more came to the fore at a 3 week sensitisation campaign against drug abuse for 150 youth in Gombe state, organized by the North East Development Commission Education (NEDC) Endowment Fund (EEF) ,

The Managing Director, North East Development Commission, Alh. Muhammad Goni, while speaking expressed concern that the prevalence of drugs use in the area had led to increase in criminality especially terrorism.

Goni who was represented by the General Manager, Humanitarian Affairs, Hajiya Sa’adatu Shehu reverenced a recent survey and the negative impact on public health,

He therefore sued for a collaborative efforts to containing the social menace.

For the state Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) , Mr. Okechukwu Nkere, painted a grave picture of the problem especially against the background of the upcoming election, where youths are expected to play major roles.

Providing a background to the programme, the facilitator Presiding Director, David Folaranmi Foundation, said it was a reduction in the rate of abuse of dangerous drugs amongst youths in the North East.

According to him, the prevalence in drug use in the region was indeed worrisome and required urgent and concerted action.

He said about 10, 000 youths had already been sensisited on the need to shun drugs, in a situation where about 35 percent of them indulge in drug abuse.

Hajiya Asama’u Mohammed Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of NEDC EEF also presented a perspective to the problem, saying the programme would properly guide yoiuths  away from substance abuse.

Commending the teachers in their efforts towards moulding the character and behavior of youths in the society, said this had been playing effective roles in positive role modeling, to the benefit of society.

According to her, the NDLEA deserved kudos for efforts towards ridding the society of substance abuse.
