Chelsea Defender Thiago Sliva Drops Retirement Hint 

Thiago Silva has hinted he may be inching closer to retirement as his contract winds down at Chelsea.

As a temporary fix, the Brazilian defender joined the Blues in 2020 as a free agent, but he has since proven to be an essential member of their defence. The 39-year-old’s contract expires in the summer of 2024, but it seems like he’s thinking about staying in the game after that.

He told Sky Italia: “The end of my career is approaching and it’s not a simple thing. I have to think if I stop, or if I continue and where I go: there’s the family, I have two sons who play at Chelsea.

“At the moment it’s I take this opportunity to play and make the most of this last year of my contract at Chelsea. But I’m very happy and proud of the career I’ve had, of what I’m doing now at 39 years old.

“I have prepared all my life to make the most of my work: football is my passion. Surely after I retire I will continue in this world, I don’t know how yet.”

Silva has been one of the few bright spots for Stamford Bridge throughout the last few seasons, despite all the chaos that has occurred there, including the traumatic exit of owner Roman Abramovich and the stormy tenure of his successor Todd Boehly. For the immediate future, Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, and Levi Colwill will lead Chelsea’s defensive, but if the former Paris Saint-Germain player decides to hang up his boots at the conclusion of the season, it will be a significant loss for the west London club. It is also possible to argue that the veteran will become a legend in the game.

Chelsea’s next match is against Blackburn Rovers in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday. On Monday, they take on local rivals Tottenham.
