Bruno Fernandes Calls For Specific Rule Change

Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes has called on the law makers to make a rule change for players receiving yellow cards after removing their shirts.

The Portuguese has requested a rule change after Amad Diallo received a second yellow card for taking off his jersey during injury time in extra time against Liverpool, which secured the Red Devils’ spot in the FA Cup semifinals. As of right now, players who take off their shirt on the pitch before being replaced are subject to a yellow card being issued to them.

Talking to the media after the game, Bruno Fernandes said [via The Athletic]: “This moment has to be enjoyed and I think it’s one of the rules football has to change,” he added. You should be able to celebrate the goal, obviously with respect to other clubs, to enjoy your moment.”

The rule has been in place for a while, and Amad discovered after the match that he had previously been booked by referee John Brooks during the wild moment in the 121st minute. He did, however, also admit that the victory and the goal made him feel less disappointed about being sent off.

It is quite improbable that the current regulations pertaining to a player’s booking for taking off his shirt will be altered anytime soon. In 2020, the rule was also questioned when Lionel Messi received a yellow card against Osasuna for wearing a shirt honouring Diego Maradona, who had passed away the previous week.
