Breaking: South Africa Cuts Power Supply To Nigerian High Commission

The South African authorities have cut electricity supply to the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa.

This was announced in X (formerly Twitter) post today.

In a post, Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane Ms. Nasiphi Moya, announced that officials of the City had cut off electricity to the diplomatic mission.

She said this was after outstanding payments for municipal services remained unsettled by the Nigerian authorities.

“#TshwaneYaTima: We’ve disconnected electricity at the High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“They owe the city for utility services,” she wrote, adding that electricity would be restored to the high commission after the outstanding bill must have been settled.

“We thank the High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for honouring its debt to the city. The city will reconnect electricity,” the mayor said in a follow-up communication

The reasons for the disconnection notwithstanding, many would see it as a slight on Nigeria especially given the nature of relationship that had existed between the two countries in the recent.

This festered recently when Nigerians resident in that country came under severe attack to evacuate the country.

On the other hand, the issue of indebtedness at that level, also raises questions as per the country’s manner of handling of its image abroad, moreso in South Africa.
