Secretary-General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo, has died at the age of 63.
Mele Kyari, the NNPC GMD, announced his death in the early hours of Wednesday, describing his departure as a great loss to his immediate family, NNPC Nigeria, OPEC, and the global energy community.
At 4.32 a.m. Wednesday, the NNPC GMD issued a statement on his verified Twitter handle, @MKKyari, saying, “We lost our esteemed Dr Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo.” He died around 11 p.m. on July 5, 2022. His immediate family, the NNPC, our country Nigeria, OPEC, and the global energy community have all suffered a great loss. “Arrangements for burial will be announced shortly.”
Though the cause of his death was not disclosed in the tweet, President Muhammadu Buhari met with Barkindo at the State House on Tuesday, praising the outgoing OPEC secretary general’s six-year tenure and describing him as a worthy ambassador of Nigeria.
