Breaking – Community Where Residents Are Fleeing Their Homes

News is breaking of how residents of Bonny Community are now fleeing their homes in the search for safety.

The cause of the flight is gas leaks in Sagbama, a Bonny community of Rivers State hosting oil pipelines facilities.

There are indications that the leaks were first noticed last week, but nothing decisive had been done to rectify it.

IT was also said there had been similar leaks in the past from the same facility which was transferred to an entirely different firm.

Unconfirmed accounts mentioned the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company as the new owner of the facility although this was to be confirmed as at the time of filing this report.

The facility where the leak was spotted was said to have previously been operated by an oil firm but was later transferred to a different firm, probably the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company Limited.

There were also reports that the community had already contacted Shell, a major oil operator in the area, but there was no confirmation of the above.

However,  the Youth Leader of Sangama Community, Mr Iyalla John-Jumbo, was quoted as saying that the oil company contacted about the matter was yet to respond.

It was however reported that many residents were fleeing their homes.

At the back of their minds is a similar leak two years ago, which left negative consequences in its trail.

John-Jumbo said during 2020 incident,  about three persons were hospitalised as they suffered different symptoms of ailments, hence this time around, the community was also deserted.

He said, “We are calling on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari and other stakeholders to compel the NDPC to quickly shut down the facility in order to mitigate any further impact on the area.”

When contacted, a Spokesman for Shell, Micheal Adande, said the facility did not belong to shell
