Breaking: Anxiety As Police Invade NLC Headquarters At Night

Anxiety is at its peak after the police invaded the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja at night.

The heavily armed policemen stormed Labour’s headquarters, commonly known as Labour House at about 9pm, The Eagle gathered.

“They broke into second floor and ransacked books at the bookshop carrying all the materials into their van claiming that the materials were used to incite and organise the recent protest”, said a source

It was not clear however the reason for the storm, but the team ransacked the offices of the NLC. , but it would be recalled that last month, the NLC had declared that it was not the organiser of the hunger protest now ongoing in the country.

The union was responding to reports doing the rounds, that it had pulled out of a planned national protest organised by the youths.

In a statement signed by the Nigeria Labour Congress President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, the apex labour union had wondered the suggestion that it should withdraw from the protest that it was not organising in the first place. :

“The truth is that the Nigeria Labour Congress cannot withdraw from a protest that it did not organise. It is only the organisers of the speculated national protest that can decide to pull out or continue with the protest.

“The Nigeria Labour Congress has internal trade union mechanisms especially leadership decision-making processes that its industrial actions such as protests pass through before such activities are undertaken.

“Yet, the fact that the Nigeria Labour Congress is not the body organising the protest does not mean that Organised Labour is oblivious of the dire living conditions Nigerians have been subjected to by the harsh economic policies of government”, the union said..

A national daily’s report on the latest incident, quoted a saying “that “Comrades, armed security men, both in uniform and mufti just invaded the Labour House in their numbers and were at the 10th Floor and 2nd Floor”..
