Brazil Fearful of Messi’s Decision-Making Power Ahead of 2026 World Cup Qualifier Against Argentina – Diniz 

Prior to Brazil’s World Cup qualifying match against Argentina, Fernando Diniz has acknowledged that his team is concerned about Lionel Messi.

Argentina and Brazil, arch rivals, will square off in a pivotal 2026 World Cup qualifying match on Wednesday at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium.

Ahead of the epic match, Brazil’s coach Diniz exercised caution when he said that his team is concerned about playing against a player of Messi’s calibre, citing the Argentine star’s “decision-making” as their key area of concern.

With only two victories in their first five games, the Selecao’s 2026 World Cup qualification campaign has gotten off to a difficult start. The five-time winners are presently five points behind La Albiceleste, who are atop the standings.

Diniz will miss the service of Vinicius Jr, who is out of action with a muscle problem. His place upfront is likely to be taken by Arsenal star Gabriel Jesus, with the striker set to be back in action after almost a month out injured.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the Brazil head coach said: “Sure, you can’t not worry about a player of that magnitude. But we have to play our game as we try to contain all the creative capacity he has. Dealing with Messi is obviously different and you have to worry. It’s impossible not to worry about a player of his stature and the decision-making power he has.”

The 36-year-old Ballon d’Or winner will enjoy a well-deserved break after the qualifying games are over. His club Inter Miami could play a pre-season friendly against his boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys in 2024, before the new MLS season gets underway.
