The Barcelona left-back, Alejandro Balde may require surgery to treat a hamstring injury he suffered against Athletic Club, which would prevent him from playing for the remainder of the campaign.

During the first half of Barca’s Copa del Rey match against Athletic Club, the young full-back staggered off the pitch in tears. Balde is expected to miss the remainder of the season if he has surgery after it has subsequently been revealed that he suffered a major hamstring injury.

The injury leaves the Blaugrana shorthanded at left-back. Marcos Alonso is currently out, while Joao Cancelo is in the early stages of recovering from an injury of his own. Xavi entrusted youngster Hector Fort with heavy minutes on Wednesday night.

This season, Xavi has frequently looked to Barca’s renowned La Masia academy for cover. Fermin Lopez and Lamine Yamal have been there consistently, although Fort and Pau Cubarsi have only recently entered the picture. In last weekend’s match against Real Betis, the Blaugrana started two 16-year-olds.

The left-back will decide whether or not to undergo surgery soon. Should he succeed, his campaign will come to an end, and he will have to compete against time to be ready for Euro 2024.
