APC Advises Okupe To ‘Honourably’ Resign From Peter Obi’s Campaign Team

Dr. Doyin Okupe’s immediate resignation from the campaign team of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s nominee, was demanded by the All Progressives Congress presidential campaign council on Tuesday.

On Monday, an Abuja-based Federal High Court found the embattled Director General of the Obi-Datti campaign guilty of violating the Money Laundering Act.

In the end, the LP leader received a two and a half year prison term.

On each of the 26 counts, totaling N13 million, for which he was found guilty, the presiding court, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, did provide an alternative of a N500 000 fine.

The former Senior Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan opted to pay a fine of N13 million to beat the 4:30pm deadline.

Bayo Onanuga, the director of media and publicity for the Tinubu-Shettima Campaign Council, made fun of Okupe and claimed that he was unworthy of holding the position of director general for Obi’s campaign.

According to Onanuga, the former PDP stalwart’s only remaining alternative is to “honourably” withdraw from the race.

He said, “Okupe should resign from his post as DG of Obi’s Campaign. He should do so honorably. The court has spoken. He should no longer be involved in the campaign.”

But a tenacious Okupe resorted to Twitter to blame his troubles on his “enemies,” according to his tweets.

He tweeted, “God is not man. The enemies have tried in so many ways but keep failing…Victory is of God.”

In response to the incident, Obi had sworn that he wouldn’t be disheartened by the conviction of his campaign director.

The former Anambra governor made the claim during a Monday press conference in Uyo.

The LP candidate stated that he would not let the conviction deter him from letting the legal system’s due process run its course.

“I am hearing about it (the conviction) just like you. I am still studying what is coming out of the court and everything. I believe in the rule of law. It is not going to demoralise me,” he said.

“Today, when I arrived Akwa Ibom somebody asked me why I haven’t been using my aircraft because it has been grounded and all that, and I said to him that nothing demoralises me.

“In my life, I have never stayed where they dropped me, otherwise, I would have been where they dropped me before. This election, if they like, let them do anything about people who are around me. I will get there.”
