Alex Grimaldo Addresses Alonso’s Future Amid Liverpool Speculation

Despite interest from Liverpool and Bayern Munich, Alex Grimaldo praised the “special” Xabi Alonso and wants the Spaniard to stay at Bayer Leverkusen.

The Spanish mastermind has led Bayer Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga, an achievement made even more astonishing by the team’s dominant 10-point advantage over defending champion Bayern Munich. Alonso’s time at the club has been nothing short of extraordinary. As a result, the Spaniard is receiving plenty of offers, with the Reds and Bayern hoping to appoint him to succeed their current managers, Thomas Tuchel and Jurgen Klopp, respectively.

Michael Edwards, the sports director of Liverpool, is reportedly in the midst of intense negotiations with Alonso’s representatives. Edwards is working nonstop behind the scenes to obtain Alonso’s services. Due to his strong relationship with Liverpool and his excellent time as manager at Leverkusen, Alonso has emerged as the front-runner over other managerial candidates, including Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton and Lens manager Franck Haise.

Grimaldo, keen on retaining Alonso’s guidance, voiced his admiration for the esteemed coach and highlighted Alonso’s distinctive coaching style and ability to inspire player growth.

“I had very good coaches throughout my career, both at Barcelona and at Benfica. But Xabi is something special. There are not many coaches like him in the world of football,” he told Bild.

When pressed about the chances of winning the Bundesliga, Grimaldo said: “The Bundesliga would be special. To come here and win a title in my first year that Bayer Leverkusen has never won before would be to make history. This is something that the whole team and I also want to achieve. And I think we are on the right track.”

Leverkusen has denied rumours that Alonso’s contract contained a release clause, and they are steadfast in their wish to keep Alonso on staff. They can potentially win a treble for the first time since the 2001–02 season and are still undefeated in all competitions.
