AI-Generated Girlfriend Scams Chinese Man £22,000

A Chinese man is now ruing his misfortune after he was scammed out of his £22,000, by an Artificial Intelligence, AI-generated girlfriend.

The man, identified only by his surname Liu was convinced he was in a relationship with a woman named Ms Jiao, unknown to him that he had been dealing with an AI-generated girlfriend.

He felt trilled by the personalised messages he was receiving from Ms Jiao, not knowing that it was a fictional character created using generative artificial intelligence.

The scammers behind the fake persona manipulated him into sending 200,000 yuan (around £21,722), claiming the money was needed for medical bills and business expenses, according to a report in the Tribune of India.

Among the things that the scammers used to convince Liu were AI-generated photos and videos and even fabricated medical reports, police report says, and these worked to convince the man that the so-called girlfriend was actually in financial distress.

The report went ahead to cite cases of AI scams, including those involving romantic relationships, adding that they were becoming an increasing global concern.

It cited a January incident in which scammers tricked a 53-year-old French woman into believing she was in a romantic relationship with Hollywood actor Brad Pitt.

Through that they were able to fleece her of £661,508.

Their tools included fake messages and AI-generated videos and these caused her to divorce her husband and suffer heavy financial losses, the report added.
