Ameenah-gurib..when she just became president

It is one down for women as one of its revered own, Mauritius President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, has resigned from office.

Information reaching gazeta.com indicates that Gurib-Fakim , who has been implicated in a financial scandal, resigned today Saturday.Her lawyer, Yousouf Mohamed, announced the resignation.

The latest action is coming on the heels of earlier reiterations by the woman not to stand down. Gurib-Fakim, Africa’s only female head of state, submitted her resignation in the “national interest,” her lawyer Mohamed told reporters, adding that it would take effect on March 23.

By 2015 estimates, Mauritius officially known as Republic of Mauritius is a country of roughly 1.2 million people. Its capital is in Port Louis with 150,000 inhabitants. With a Star and Key of the Indian Ocean as its motto, the country practices democratic governance and its people speak English, French and Creole. Majority of the people (49%) practice the Hindu religion.
