AFCON: Moses Simon Reacts To Nigeria’s Mediocre Performance 

Moses Simon is pleased with Nigeria’s passable showing in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, having made it to the round of 16.

Despite their qualification for the 2023 Afcon knockout stages, Nigeria’s performance has been disappointing as they have fallen short of the high expectations placed on them.

The Super Eagles have a number of talented players, like Crystal Palace’s Alex Iwobi and Napoli’s potent striker Victor Osimhen, but Jose Peseiro’s squad has been playing less appealing football.

However, Simon and the rest of his teammates don’t seem bothered after they beat Guinea Bissau 1-0 to finish second in Group A.

“We don’t care if we score 20 goals, the most important thing for us is the victory,” Simon was quoted as saying by France 24.

His coach, however, was a bit more diplomatic and chose his words carefully. Peseiro’s focus in the knockout stages will be to make sure that his team are an immovable and unshakable force in their rear guard.

“The main point is that we conceded no goals and we scored one. If we keep doing that we can reach the final. My responsibility is to choose the best way to win this competition. I chose another strategy and the players believe in it – to not concede goals because we will score at least one,” Peseiro was quoted by France 24.

Nigeria did not have the best results at the group stage, scoring just once in each of their three matches.

The last time the Super Eagles won an Afcon was in South Africa in 2013. They are eager to win another one and tie Ghana, who are probably going to lose following a 2-2 draw with Mozambique.
