AFCON 2023: Heavy Blow For Egypt As Talisman Salah Goes Off Injured

Egypt suffered a severe setback on Thursday when their top player, Mohamed Salah, was forced off the pitch due to injury in the first half of their encounter against Ghana.

Late in the first half of the Africa Cup of Nations match against Ghana, Salah was knocked off the ball. The forward was promptly replaced by Mostafa Fathi and went off the pitch. Although the nature of Salah’s injury is yet unknown, The Athletic speculates that it may be a hamstring issue.

A minute after Salah was substituted, Mohammed Kudus gave Ghana the lead with a superb strike from the edge of the box, dealing a double blow to Egypt. Egypt’s chances of making it farther in the competition have taken a slight knock as they drew their opening match against Mozambique.

If his injury proves severe, Salah may be ruled out for the rest of the competition and will likely head back to Liverpool to begin his recovery. Egypt, however, will be hoping to have him back fit for their final game of Group B against Cape Verde.

Egypt will assess the 31-year-old’s injury and determine whether he is fit enough to play against Cape Verde. The prolific forward’s fitness is a worry for Liverpool as well as the national squad.
