An 18-year-old man was electrocuted while attempting to break in to an ATM and steal cash, but his family later sued the bank seeking $500,000 in damages.

The incident took place in Houston, Texas.

Surveillance footage showed 18-year-old Marcus Williams approaching an ATM late at night, carrying a metal crowbar, and attempting to force the machine open to access the cash inside.

During the attempt, the metal tool reportedly came into contact with internal electrical components, causing a high-voltage current to pass through his body. Marcus collapsed at the scene and lost consciousness.

It was not until the following morning that an employee noticed something unusual and called 911.

By the time police and emergency responders arrived, Marcus had already died.

The medical examiner later determined that the cause of death was cardiac arrest, resulting from a high-voltage electric shock.

Following the incident, Marcus’s family filed a lawsuit against the bank, arguing that inadequate safety measures contributed to the tragedy.

They sought $500,000 in compensation, claiming that the bank should bear some responsibility for failing to prevent such a hazard.

However, after reviewing the case, the judge ruled that the bank had fulfilled its reasonable duty of care and that Marcus had knowingly engaged in illegal activity.

The court concluded that his death was a direct consequence of his own action as a result. When the lawsuit was dismissed, the bank was found not liable, and Marcus’s family was ordered to cover the repair costs for the damaged ATM.
