Onitsha Main Market Closure: We’ll Not Join Protest Against Soludo –Ebonyi Traders

Anyone planning protests against the Anambra State Government’s closure of the Onitsha Main Market, should count us out, Ebonyi State indigenes trading in the market have stated.

They have instead, declared their full support for state governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo.

The Ebonyi Town Union in Anambra State stated this position in a statement issued by its President-General, Moses Igwe, in Onitsha today.

Igwe has as a consequence, advised Ebonyi traders against getting involved in any action capable of disrupting or endangering businesses and lives of people.

Commenting on the issue of Monday market closures, he added:

“Closing markets every Monday is not helping anyone.

“It is even more damaging to the traders themselves.

“Sit-at-home actions would not secure the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

“Non-indigenes, particularly Ebonyi traders, often bear the brunt whenever protests turn violent. “We advise our kinsmen to completely disassociate themselves from any form of demonstration against government policy.

“Ebonyi people are peace-loving, law-abiding residents who have enjoyed a cordial relationship with the Soludo administration.

“Governor Soludo is a brother and a friend to Ebonyians. His government has shown us goodwill”, he informed.

According to him, “Ebonyi indigenes in Okpoko are major beneficiaries of the general hospital built by this administration.

“No Ebonyi man or woman should go against the directives of a government that has supported us,” he added.

He said Ebonyi people were opposed to the continued closure of the Onitsha main market, calling on them to resume business on Mondays.

He restated the commitment of Ebonyi people to the economic stability and peaceful coexistence that had hitherto held sway amongst indegenes in the state.
