What We Plan Concerning Cancer Care –Health Minister

The Federal Government may indeed have an ambitious cancer care programme for Nigerians, going by the assertions of the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Kunle Salako.

The ambitious programme will be come in the form of increased investment in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment facilities across the country aimed at reducing cancer-related deaths.

Dr Salako stated these while speaking during the #ProgressInPink Walk Against Breast Cancer, held at the Youth House in Abuja under the leadership of the National Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Dayo Israel.

“This administration, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has made the strongest commitment yet to the fight against cancer”, he stated.

“No government in Nigeria’s history has invested more in cancer eradication and treatment than this one”, he added.

Praising Nigerian youths for joining the campaign against breast cancer, childhood and adolescent cancers, Dr Salako stated that the current administration, in its cancer care response, was building on the foundation of the previous governments .

It was that government, he said, that built the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) and Centres of Excellence in Cancer Care.

“President Tinubu has not only expanded these centres but is also investing heavily in modern cancer treatment equipment to ensure that Nigerians have access to quality care,” he added.

On budgetary provision as it concerns cancer diagnosis and treatment in the country, the minister stated:

“This unprecedented budgetary provision is a reflection of the great leadership being demonstrated in the health sector by the Coordinating Minister, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, and myself, under the visionary direction of President Tinubu,” he said.

In a related event, the opening ceremony of the 2025 International Cancer Week (ICW) in Abuja, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, made a similar reiteration on cancer.

Represented by Director Hospital Services Department in the Ministry, Dr. Salaudeen Jimoh, he emphasised the determination of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to strengthen the national response to cancer through research, innovation, and collaboration.
