The Lesson Prison Sentence Has Taught Me -Farouk Lawan

Former House of Representatives member Farouk Lawan, recently granted a presidential pardon by President Bola Tinubu, has revealed lessons prison sentence taught him.

He told BBC Hausa service that the experience has taught him valuable lessons about life, including destiny, and political alliances.

Lawan who represented Bagwai/Shanono Federal Constituency in Kano State, was a vocal member of the house and enjoyed the immense media spotlight for his engaging contributions on issues.

In 2021 however, a high court convicted and jailed him 7 years for allegedly soliciting and receiving  bribes to remove a company from the list of firms implicated in the fuel subsidy scandal.

Farouk Lawan was however, among 175 individuals who received a presidential pardon on Thursday, October 9, 2025.

“When someone goes through a trial and Allah grants a chance for pardon, you must be thankful”, he told the station.

” My family and well-wishers across the world were all filled with joy when the news broke.

“It was indeed a day of thanksgiving to Allah, for He made it possible, and to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for doing what is right, something worthy of commendation.”

“Before I even got to prison, my mind was at peace. I knew that wherever I was going, I would meet people, and if others could survive there, I too could live through it,” he stated.

After his release in 2024, Lawan said he deliberately realigned his political direction, parting ways with the Kwankwasiyya movement, with which he had long been associated. Although he was a PDP member at the time of his imprisonment, he later instructed his supporters to join the NNPP ahead of the 2023 elections, a directive they followed.

“When Allah allows you to face trials, He also opens your eyes to see who your true allies are and who are not. When you’re in a place like prison, you have enough time to reflect deeply on your relationships,” he said.

On a bitter side however, he regretted that the leadership of the Kwakwasiyya Movement represented by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso never bothered to call while he was incarcerated despite that he was a notable member of the movement.

“It’s been a year now, and not even a phone call from him — not to say ‘thank you Allah you’re out,’ or offer a prayer for me,” he lamented.
