We hope you learnt your lessons is the word from federal government to the 191 stranded Nigerians just evacuated from India and who arrived Nigerian shores yesterday.

The stranded Indian returnees, evacuated back home by the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, arrived the country via the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja.

Director-General of the National Emergency Authority (NEMA), Mustapha Habib Ahmed was among those who received the returnees, expressing the belief: we hope you leant your lessons.

Represented by the Deputy Director Search and Rescue, Ishaya Isa chonoko, Ahmed said the federal government approved the evacuation to ease the suffering of the stranded Nigerians.

Speaking earlier, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq represented by a Deputy Director in the Ministry, Dr Suleiman Abubakar admonished them to be law abiding.

She said the S100 each provided the returnees by the federal government was meant to support their movement home.

The Eagle reports that the stranded Nigerians were evacuated via an Ethiopian Airline charted flight.

Earlier in October, NEMA had received 542 stranded Nigerians from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Head of the Press Unit of NEMA, Manzo Ezekiel, giving a breakdown, said the returnees included 79 males, 460 females and three infants.

This is coming amidst growing global concern over the issue of refugees.

Refugees meaning

According to the United Nations Commission for Refugees (UNCR), refugees are people who have fled war, violence, conflict or persecution and have crossed an international border to find safety in another country.

The Boko Haram conflict in the North East of Nigeria, as well as unfavourable economic situations have forced several Nigerians to become international refugees.

Continues the UNCR definition, such people, “often have had to flee with little more than the clothes on their back, leaving behind homes, possessions, jobs and loved ones”..

It is also for the same reason of unfavourable economy at home, that Canada immigration refugees and citizenship have become issues for many.
