Lagos State Govt Alerts Public On Cancerous Bottled Drinks

Do you know that some of the bottled drinks that you consume on the streets of Lagos without caution can actually cause cancer?

Well, that is the latest warning from the Lagos State Government, and it is again advising the public to be wary of patronising such bottled drinks forthwith.

The Lagos State government gave the warning through one of its agencies, the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA).

The General Manager, Mr Afolabi Solebo, interacting with journalists in Lagos today, said bottled drinks exposed to the sunlight were potential cancer agents, and should not consumed.

He didn’t stop there but threatened that the government would soon descend on the sellers as a way of safeguarding the consuming public.

He has also warned consumers to take their own lives in their hands by avoiding such drinks exposed to the sun for a long time.

Mr Solebo said the government would not fold its arms watching such dangerous items sold to unsuspecting consumers but has concluded plans to descend on those behind the sale.

“Plastic bottled drinks exposed to continuous sunlight are dangerous to health and very cancerous. Therefore, it will be part of our public enlightenment between now and the end of the year.

“So that by 2023, we will not only confiscate sucj drinks but we will prosecute people that are displaying those products under sunlight”.

Indeed, plastic drinks of all forms exposed in the sun for sale, are a common sight within the length and breadth of Lagos.

Aside motor parks and markets, some shop owners equally pile such drinks on the bare floor from where they serve consumers, with little or no regard for the safety of the contents.

But the Lagos State government has now resolved that it would no longer have any of that..

“We also want to have a stakeholders’ meeting with manufacturers of those bottled drinks so as to get alternatives for dummy of the products for distributors to display.

“The essence of displaying those products in the sunlight is to attract consumers to come buy. So if you can put dummies in the sun it has no effect since dummies look like the real thing,” Solebo said.

Directing attention to consumers, the consumer protecting boss, said consumers also have a role to play in the matter.

He advised them to be wary the kind of things they patronize, and never to use their money to purchase what could claim their lives.

“So the consumers do have responsibilities much as they have a right to safety, to be informed, right to clarity and quality of products, the right to choose and the right to be heard.

“Also, they have the right to consumer education and especially the right to seek redress in court or in our office and when we cannot resolve the matter amicably, we resort to litigation”, he said.
