400 Sex Tapes: Equatorial Guinea’s Baltasar Remanded In Prison

The former Director-General of the National Financial Investigation Agency in Equatorial Guinea, Baltasar Engonga, has been remanded in prison, reports have indicated.

He is being held at Malabo’s Black Beach Prison, even as a replacement has since been found for his office.

These followed the leak virile videos involving him and several women many of whom allegedly agreed to be filmed.

As much as 400 of such sex tapes had gone viral discrediting many top ranking persons on the society whose wives are involved.

Reports say a search of his office, by ANIF officials, led to the seizure of several CDs containing his sex escapades with different women.

He was dismissed in the heat of the uproar generated by the tapes, triggering a lot of other reactions.

As much as many consider his act of indulging with several women and recording such as reprehensible, there is also a theory attempting to link all with Equatorial Guinea’s President, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.

Mbasogo is head of a totalitarian government, and Baltasar Engonga is considered a possible replacement should the coast be truly clear for a change in government..

Afterall, Teodoro Obiang has been in power since 3 August 1979 after deposing his uncle Macías Nguema, following a bloody coup detat, amidst a civil war.

Nguema was later captured, tried and executed.

The government, had, citing Decree No. 118/2024, dated 4th November, dismissed Engonga over what it called “irregularities committed in the exercise of his functions, as well as inappropriate family and social conduct for the performance of public duties.”

French online blog Afrikmatin reported that Engonga, who was officially removed from his role on November 6, 2024, was subsequently chained and transferred to Malabo Central Prison. He faces charges of corruption and embezzlement.

Additionally, online newspaper UGStandard reported that the sex tapes began circulating on social networks while Engonga was already held at Malabo’s notorious Black Beach Prison on charges of embezzling public funds, as reported by state television, TVGE.

In a fact-checking report published Wednesday, Dubawa verified that Engonga had indeed been taken into custody on corruption charges and is currently being held in Black Beach Prison.

In taking steps towards the arrest and prosecution of Engonga, Obiang takes cover in the 1982 constitution of Equatorial Guinea which gives him extensive powers.

He could name and dismiss members of the cabinet, make laws by decree, dissolve the law chamber of Representatives, amongst many others.
