Nigeria’s U20 team, Flying Eagles, are through to the finals of the 12th African Games in Rabat, Morocco. The team defeated Mali on penalties, 5-4 after the game ended 0-0.
Both sides failed to convert several scoring chances, resulting in the penalty shootout.
Nigerian goalkeeper, Detan Ogundare had been impressive, having saved four of the penalty kicks. Thus, Nigeria will on Friday meet either Senegal or Burkina Faso in the final match for the gold medal of the Games.
The final match will be staged at Stade Boubker Ammar, Morocco.
So far in the 12th African Games, Team Nigeria has won six gold medals in weightlifting and three silver at the ongoing African Games in Morocco.
It is the first time that Nigeria will reach the final of the men’s football tournament of the African Games since losing the gold medal match to Cameroon inside the National Stadium Complex, Abuja in 2003.
Nigeria won the gold medal of the football event (no women edition then) of the 2nd African Games she hosted in Lagos in 1973 and then lost in the final to host nation Algeria in 1978.
