Is insurance policy of any kind able to remedy these massive losses? This is one of the big questions that have trailed the sudden death of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Access Holdings.

The question has become very germane on account of several factors, viewed from general insurance perspectives.

His is one aviation disaster, but it did throw up a number of other issues: loss of lives, grievous damage to aircraft, loss of property and endangering of individual or corporate reputation.

In fact, some have inferred that even the corporate profile of Access Holdings, the organisation where Wigwe held sway until death, had been jolted somewhat. Was it complicit in anyway whatsoever, not to mention issues like investor-confidence, associated shock on employees, friends, family and associates.

In addition, Wigwe was not in the Chopper alone, but had his wife there, son and a former Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, all of who were confirmed dead.

This was how Access Holdings PLC officially reported the disaster:

“Dr. Wigwe died alongside his wife and son on Friday, February 9, 2024 in a helicopter accident in the United States of America,” Access Holdings said.

“The entire Access Family mourns the loss of Herbert, Doreen and Chizi. We extend our deep and sincere sympathies to his family and loved ones. Dr. Wigwe was a key driving force and a larger-than-life personality who brought his remarkable passion, energy, and experience to the transformation of the Access franchise since joining the Bank in 2002.”

In addition, Abubakar Jimoh, chairman of Access Holdings, said Wigwe’s death was a major loss, adding that the Access family owed him a debt of gratitude.
