Why Obasanjo’s Image Should Be On Redesigned Naira Note – Atiku

One of the three naira notes that are set to be redesigned, according to Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate, should have the portrait of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

In a series of tweets on Saturday, Atiku also praised the 85-year-old elder statesman and African Union mediator for facilitating peace talks between the Ethiopian government and Tigrayan rebels following two years of devastating conflict that left millions in need of aid in Africa’s second-most populous nation.

Ethiopia’s government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), in a joint statement this week,  pledged to “permanently silence the guns” and put an end to the two years of fighting in the region.

The crisis broke out on November 4, 2020, when Nobel Peace Prize winner Abiy dispatched soldiers into Tigray after charging the local government TPLF with attacking federal army facilities.

The “amazing prowess” of Obasanjo in restoring peace to Ethiopia was praised by Atiku on Saturday.

“I’m not shocked. My employer is someone I am familiar with. During our administration, he carried out the similar actions in Liberia and So Tomé and Prncipe, according to the PDP candidate. Between May 1999 and May 2007, while Obasanjo was president by democratic election, Atiku served as Nigeria’s vice president. Despite some difficulties during their second terms in power, Obasanjo and Atiku eventually worked out their disagreements.

“If for nothing else, he is most deserving of a Nobel Peace Prize, and I will nominate him when entries are open for nominations.

“Africa is blessed to have a statesman of such impeccable democratic credentials as Chief Obasanjo. A man whose image ought to be in the redesigned Naira note to inspire future generations of Nigerians to sacrifice for their nation and continent,” he added.

THEEAGLE had earlier reported that as of December 15, 2022, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will begin issuing redesigned N200, N500, and N1,000 notes. The existing notes will continue to be legal tender and circulate alongside the new ones until January 31, 2023, according to a statement made by CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele on October 26.

Recall that in the past several months, Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Bola iTinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) both paid Obasanjo a visit at his home in Abeokuta. The previous chief of state of the military, however, has not endorsed any candidates.
