VAR Resolution? EPL In Talks To Introduce Semi -Automated Offsides 

The Premier League is negotiating to implement semi-automated offside, and further improvements to the troubled VAR system may be forthcoming.

The use of VAR, which was introduced to the Premier League more than four years ago, is currently the subject of greater debate than ever and dominates the agenda practically every week. The International Football Association Board (IFAB), the body that represents football’s legislators behind the scenes, has started a series of discussions on possible systemic changes, even as managers lash out and pundits propose changing or doing away with it. The clubs are reportedly growing more optimistic that the Premier League will approve the use of semi-automated offside technology for the start of the following season, but any significant changes will probably require many months of testing, according to the Telegraph.

In Serie A, FIFA World Cups, and UEFA competitions, semi-automated offside has already been integrated into video assistant refereeing (VAR). The results are communicated to officials far faster than in the English premier league. Although the Premier League has so far rejected proposals to implement an automatic system, it appears that eventually one will be implemented to address at least one of the concerns that managers, supporters, and players have about the technology—namely, their anxious wait for decisions. It is also much too early to tell how football will handle the plethora of other negative repercussions of video technology.

As the Premier league begins its final round of games before the November international break on Saturday, referee chief Howard Webb will be hoping for a calm weekend.
