Smugglers Throw Immigrants Into The Sea Over Inability To Pay Ransom

Survivors of a boat tragedy earlier this month have recounted their ordeals, alleging that it was premeditated by Smugglers

There had been a migrant boat tragedy on the Atlantic Ocean, near Dakhla, Morocco, between Mauritania and Morocco earlier this month, drawing global as much as national governments’ attention.

Reports indicated that 44 out of a total of 65 Pakistani immigrants on board, either got drowned or died after alleged torture, even as 10 bodies have been recovered.

Some of the survivors have told a 4-man Pakistani investigative team in Morocco that the accident was a premeditated massacre orchestrated by human traffickers.

They said the human smugglers kept the boat stranded in open waters for several days, demanding ransom.

“Those who paid were released, while those who couldn’t were beaten with hammers and thrown into the sea,” they stated.

Aside the direct attack by the smugglers, they listed other factors which led to the death of many passengers to include cold weather, lack of food, and physical assault.

“The boat was under the control of an international human trafficking ring, involving smugglers from Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco,” they said.

It was crowded and survivors faced other harsh conditions like food and water shortages report added.

On Monday, the Pakistan foreign office announced that another of its national had been identified among the survivors of the boat tragedy .

“Based on verified information, one more Pakistani national named Muhammad Adeel s/o Muhammad Rasheed, has been identified among the survivors of the boat tragedy near Dakhla, Morocco,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in its statement.

As of now, a total of 22 Pakistanis have been identified among the survivors.
