Revealed: Leicester City Could Face Record-Breaking Points Deduction In First Season Back

Premier League promotion for Leicester comes with a catch: they will lose manager Enzo Maresca and will lose a record number of points due to FFP violations.

The Championship title and first-time automatic promotion to the Premier League have allowed the Foxes to quickly reclaim their place in the English top tier. But, before making a big-time comeback, the team has to overcome some serious obstacles. As Mauricio Pochettino steps down as manager, title-winning coach Enzo Maresca is anticipated to join Chelsea, and the team may lose a significant amount of points due to suspected financial rule violations.

Leicester could be hit with a deduction of “anything between six to 15 points,” according to The Telegraph. A hefty sanction would do serious harm to the team’s hopes of staying in the top flight, particularly with a new manager needed in the summer. Former Chelsea boss Graham Potter and West Brom manager Carlos Corberan are potential candidates to replace Maresca.

In 2023–24, Premier League teams Nottingham Forest and Everton were both docked points. Portsmouth’s nine-point punishment during the 2009–10 season, which ended in their relegation to the Championship, is the largest penalty in Premier League history to date.

Maresca, who departs the Foxes after just a season and joins Chelsea on a five-year contract, is expected to get compensation from Chelsea. The Foxes will now start looking for a new manager, who might have a difficult time retaining the squad in the top level come playoff time.
