It is a bold return for the Lagos Fanti Festival, with the Lagos governor, Babajide Sanwo-olu joining in the celebration.

Sanwo-olu has also promptly described the 3 major highlights of the festival.

In a statement shared via his official X handle on Sunday, Sanwo-Olu identified the Fanti Festival with 3 major phases thus:

1. the Afro-Brazilian Food Fair,
2. a Heritage Art Exhibition, and
3. a colourful Grand Parade

He called it a radiant celebration of culture, colour, and community, adding that it rekindles the soul of Lagos.

Taking to the streets alongside enthusiastic crowds, the governor described the festival as “more than a celebration — a powerful reconnection to our roots and a revival of a treasured heritage.”

In a statement shared via his official X handle on Sunday, Sanwo-Olu highlighted the carnival’s three major showcases: the Afro-Brazilian Food Fair, a Heritage Art Exhibition, and a colourful Grand Parade.

“Today, we were part of something truly special, the return of the Lagos Fanti Carnival. It wasn’t just a celebration; it was a powerful reconnection to our roots, a revival of a cultural legacy that has shaped who we are.

“Today, the streets of Lagos Island transformed into a vibrant tapestry of colour, rhythm, and expressions of community. ’, the governor stated.

Impressed by the turnout of revelers, Sanwo-olu noted the carnival fostered unity and collective pride among Lagosians.

”The Fanti Carnival, with roots dating back to the 1800s, was enriched by Afro-Brazilian returnees who brought not only samba beats and intricate costumes but also architectural artistry.

“Today, we experienced the return of this historic event and the unique cultural identity of Lagos Island.

“This year’s carnival was exceptional, featuring three main attractions, an Afro-Brazilian Food Showcase, a Heritage Art Exhibition, and the grand parade. We enjoyed performances by local musicians and dancers, as well as cultural groups showcasing traditional masquerades and samba-inspired drum ensembles.

“It was an absolute pleasure to see so many people come together to embrace the spirit of unity, resilience, and joy that the Fanti Carnival embodies.”

According to him, the Fanti Festival is cultural fiesta owes much to Afro-Brazilian returnees who brought with them samba rhythms, ornate costumes, and architectural brilliance that have shaped the cultural identity of Lagos Island.
