Lagos-Ibadan Expressway: Anxiety Over Planned 10 Week Traffic Diversion

Motorists on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway may have to prepare for more shuttle time on the express following a planned 10-week traffic diversion.

The traffic diversion which begins next Monday, January 30, 2023, will last till Friday, April 15, 2023, the Lagos State government has announced.

The Eagle reports the Lagos state Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, made the announcement in a statement, explaining that it would start the diversion from the Old Tollgate bus stop down to the Berger section.

It added that the road work would be carried out in short segments to reduce commuter inconveniences.

The Eagle correspondent who has been monitoring activities on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway observes increasing anxiety in motorists even before now, occasioned by regular gridlocks.

It has usually forced some people to resort to commuting by commercial motorbikes with increased risks to personal safety and high commuting costs.

Some Lagos residents who had to use the road today complained about arriving at their destinations late.

However, Oladeinde has stated that the U-turn in front of the Lagos State Emergency Centre would be temporarily closed to traffic.

According to him, motorists on the expressway would be diverted to the next U-turn at the Old Toll Gate by the traffic control point.

In addition, traffic from CMD Road, intending to connect 7UP and Motorways on the Lagos-bound carriageway would also make use of the Old Tollgate/Traffic Point U–turn.

Also, trucks and heavy-duty vehicles would be diverted to Ojota Interchange, while the traffic on CMD Road inbound the expressway would be redirected to the entry point besides the FMW weighbridge to access the expressway on a contraflow.

Users of the expressway, the commissioner advised, should be disciplined to reduce inconveniences and anxieties that may occur.

For example, he advised against indiscriminate stopping, waiting, and parking along CMD Road, as this could complicate the traffic hassles.
