How NNPP Ended APC’s Kabiru Gaya’s 16 Year Senate Dominance

For sixteen years, Kabiru Gaya of the All Progressives Congress (APC) reigned at the Senate like a colossus, but he has now been stopped by New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP)’s Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila.

Sumaila would now take over representing the people of Kano South Senatorial district, in the Upper Chamber.

The former House of Representative member defeated Gaya in the election conducted last Saturday.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) today announced the results of the election through the returning officer, Professor Ibrahim Barde.

Professor Barde said Sumaila polled 319,857 votes to defeat Gaya who polled 192,518, and Galadanci Murtal Bashir of the People’s Democratic Pary (PDP) who polled 14,880 while the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Umar Darki polled 2,875 votes.

The Eagle reports that Sumaila, was a former legislative aide for President Buhari and also a ormer member of the House of Representatives.

On the other hand, Gaya served as governor of Kano state in 1992 and has been in the Senate from 2007.
