PHOTOS: After Helene: Mexico, Nepal Experience Own Natural Disasters

Mexico and Nepal have joined the United States of America (USA) in grief occasioned by natural disasters, experiencing a storm and floods and landslides.

In South-western Mexico, devastating evidences of Hurricane John, remained visible up till Saturday with flooding that forced rescue agencies to continue evacuating residents from their homes.

The hurricane had already claimed about 22 lives after a ravaging week caused by floods.

Many of the dead in Guerrero, the worst-hit state and one of Mexico’s poorest, were as a result of mudslides that hit homes.

There is also grief in Nepal where two days of heavy rain caused landslides and floods that ended up claiming about 151 people and several others missing.

Traffic was grounded in the Kathmandu valley while schools suffered substantial damage.

“We have urged the authorities concerned to close schools in the affected areas for three days,” Lakshmi Bhattarai, a spokesperson for the education ministry, told Reuters.

Some parts of the capital reported rain of up to 322.2 mm (12.7 inches), pushing the level of its main Bagmati river up 2.2 m (7 ft) past the danger mark, experts said.

But there were some signs of respite yesterday morning, with the rains easing in many places, said Govinda Jha, a weather forecaster.

Aside grief from deaths and destructions, the natural disasters have also put to test, the level of emergency preparedness of the countries affected.
