Organisations seeking funding for projects that strengthen relations between Australia and India can now submit proposals for grants of up to A$800,000 under the Australian Government’s 2026–27 Maitri Grants Programme.

Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Penny Wong, announced the opening of applications on November 6, 2026, explaining that the initiative would strengthen economic, educational, cultural and research partnerships between the two countries.

The programme, administered by the Centre for Australia-India Relations, has supported more than 110 projects since its establishment in 2023.

For the 2026–27 funding round, the Australian Government has made up to A$7 million available to support projects promoting collaboration between Australian and Indian businesses, educational institutions, cultural organisations, researchers and sporting communities.

However, interested organisations must meet specific eligibility requirements before they can access the funding.

Who Can Apply for the Maitri Grants?

According to the Centre for Australia-India Relations, applications can be submitted by businesses, non-governmental organisations, academic institutions and other eligible entities, either individually or as part of a consortium.

Although organisations based outside Australia can participate, the lead applicant must be eligible to operate in Australia and hold an Australian Business Number (ABN).

Applicants must also satisfy the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s due diligence requirements, including checks relating to international sanctions, criminal history and organisational reputation.

For organisations based in India that do not meet the lead applicant requirements, the Centre recommends partnering with an eligible Australian organisation to submit a proposal.

What Projects Qualify for the Funding?

The Maitri Grants Programme prioritises projects that promote practical cooperation between Australia and India. Its areas of interest include clean energy, advanced technology, agribusiness, education and skills development, tourism, business collaboration, cultural exchanges and sporting activities.

Applicants must demonstrate how their proposed projects will strengthen relations between both countries and deliver measurable benefits.

How Will Successful Applicants Be Selected?

The Centre will assess proposals based on their contribution to the programme’s objectives, the applicant’s ability to deliver the project, the sustainability of its expected outcomes and the level of innovation involved.

Applications will also be assessed for value for money and the diversity of projects receiving support.

When is the application deadline?

The 2026–27 Maitri Grants Programme opened on November 5, 2026, and interested organisations must submit their concept notes by December 14, 2026, at 5:00 pm Australian Eastern Daylight Time.

Successful proposals are expected to be selected in March or April 2027, with project implementation scheduled to begin in June 2027.

Interested organisations can submit their proposals through the Australian Government’s “official Maitri Grants application portal” (https://dfat.smartygrants.com.au/maitrigrantsprogram26-27).
