The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is facing calls from major political parties to explain how suspected AI-generated photographs appeared in the preliminary voters’ register ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The All Progressives Congress (APC), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called for a transparent investigation into the matter.
The parties want INEC to disclose the number of affected records, explain how the photographs entered its database and establish whether Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) were issued against the questionable entries.
APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, called for an independent investigation, warning against blaming any political party without credible evidence.
ADC Director of Strategic Communication, Phrank Shaibu, demanded a comprehensive audit of the register and said the INEC chairman should resign if he could not restore public confidence in the process.
NDC National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, also urged the commission to provide details of the suspected irregularities and called on Nigerians to report questionable entries during the public display of the preliminary register.
The PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, welcomed INEC’s decision to investigate but warned that the commission must correct all identified deficiencies before the elections.
Former INEC National Commissioner, Festus Okoye, separately criticised the commission over the timing of the online publication of the preliminary register, arguing that the exercise was required by law.
INEC has acknowledged the concerns and said it is investigating the suspicious photographs. The commission is expected to address identified irregularities before the final voters’ register is certified on December 15, 2026.
