After years of being treated like a burden, I decided to test my family members.

I called saying I needed money for meds.., my son just blocked me.

My daughter said, figure it yourself; not my problem , you are sick.

My 20 year-old grandson drove 400 miles with his last $500.

I am Sandra, 67 years old grandmother from Ohio.

And 3 weeks ago, I won $333 million playing the same lottery and numbers I have been playing since 15 years – my late husband’s birthday, our anniversary and the day my grandson Jake was born.

My first instinct: call my kids, share the news, but something stopped me. Ashley and I talked and he thinks “tough love is what you need right now”.

Tough love from the boy I raised alone, working double shifts at a diner so he could go to college.

I sat in my kitchen in the same kitchen where I bandaged his knees, did his homework with a lottery ticket on the fridge worth more than the whole neighborhood, working part time at a bookstore.

“Are you okay? Do you need me to take you to the doctor?”

$500, that was everything he had and he didn’t think twice.

I cried. I then told him that he didn’t have to.

He said, “Grand ma, you have never asked me for anything. If you need help, I am coming, no arguments”

Jake passed the test but his mother and uncle, they were about to learn some very very expensive lesson about what family really means.
