Robotics And Coding: What Digitech Academy Did With 500 Innovators

A digitech academy has just unleashed 500 innovators post training, expecting them to transform the robotics and coding landscape in their home country.

The 500 graduates were part of the third cohort of the Telecel Foundation’s DigiTech Academy, a 12-week after-school digital skills training programme focused on robotics, coding, web design, and Internet of Things (IoT) applications in Ghana.

Telecel DigiTech Academy, partnered with the Ghana Education Service and the National STEM Centre, with implementing support from Mingo Foundation and Asustem Robotics, for the training.

The 500 students cane from 19 schools in five districts – South Dayi in the Volta Region, Mfantsiman in the Central Region, Jirapa in the Upper West Region, Goaso in the Ahafo Region, and Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.

They participated in the third cohort of the training covering such thematic areas as website design, Scratch programming and Arduino-based robotics.

At the end of the day, a range of innovative products were churned out, and these included a two-way smart traffic light, floor-cleaning robot, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) drink dispenser, speed detector with SMS alert, forest fire detector, and water level indicator, and pesticide sprinkler robot, amongst other innovative engineering and digitech products.

Providing his assessment, the Director of External Affairs at Telecel Ghana, Komla Buami, said “These projects on display show that talent exists everywhere and what matters is creating access and giving students room to experiment, build, and discover their own abilities”.

“Our students are now thinking differently. They are applying what they learnt to solve real problems around them, and that is the kind of education that truly prepares them for the future”, Headteacher of Peki Blengo EP JHS, Vincent Adzagbenu said in his remarks.
