Breaking: UNIJOS Orders Evacuation Of Students

The University of Jos has directed the evacuation of all students from its hostels in the wake of a troubling violence experienced in the city earlier in the day.

The decision to evacuate students had been taken after due consideration of the prevailing situation on ground the university states.

It comes amidst reports of increasing tension in the Plateau capital with reports that some people have already been killed.

Just a few days ago, there were reports of unrest in the nearby Anguwan Rukuba community, with many lives reportedly lost.

The university is caution of possibility of the problem festering and catching it and its students unawares, hence the evacuation of students.

It said in a circular that the decision to evacuate students was taken after a careful assessment of the prevailing security situation.

The circular signed by the Deputy Registrar (Information and Public Relations), University of Jos, Emmanuel Madugu, on behalf of the Registrar, said the evacuation of students would be carried out in two phases.

This is even as it informed that the Plateau State Governor, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang, has provided transport to facilitate the evacuation.

Though there is prevailing curfew in town, but the vehicles involved in the evacuation have been authorised to operate beyond the curfew hours.

“Students whose parents or guardians reside within Jos and its environs will be evacuated on Wednesday from 3:00 p.m., while those whose parents or guardians live outside Jos and its environs will be evacuated on Thursday,” the statement read.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the authorities of the school is exploring options to ensure wider security of the university.

The Eagle reports that these are happening after the Plateau state government relaxed a 48-hour curfew following gunmen attacks of residents of Angwan Rukuba which left at least 28 people dead.

It later eased the curfew on Jos North Local Government Area following improved security in the area.

Recall also that the Commissioner for Information, Joyce Ramnap, in a statement yesterday said  that the curfew would now run from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, effective today, to allow residents to attend to their normal activities within the permitted hours.
