Do you know that you could be jailed for insulting your mother? Well that the lesson an unemployed man has learned in a hard way.

He has been sentenced to 2-year imprisonment by a magistrate court for the offence.

The court sitting in Jos which handed down the sentence said the 20-year-old, John Bawa also stole.

Upon pleading guilty as charged, he was duly sentenced by the Magistrate, Mrs Irene Pati, however giving him an option of fine of N50, 000 for insulting his mother and N30,000 for stealing.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Daniel Lengman, had told the court that the complainant, Lami, reported the case at the Police Monitoring Unit on February 12.

Lengman said that Bawa had stolen N100,000 and some cooking pots which he sold as scrap, and when the complainant tried to correct him, he insulted her.

The offence contravened the Plateau Penal Code Law, the police added.
