World Betrayal Day

A new and interesting phrase has entered Nigeria’ political lexicon: “World Betrayal Day” and it is all courtesy to a renowned Nigerian politician.

No other than the National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, he has also justified christening January 23 as “World Betrayal Day”.

The inspiration behind the political movement, Kwankwasiyya Movement, he provided a justification, while addressing his loyalists at his Miller Road residence in Kano.

It centres on the decision of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, to leave the NNPP for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor, a trusted loyalist until the latest development, announced his resignation from the NNPP, on January 23, 2026.

According to him, it has been inspired by social media commentators who described the governor’s NNPP exit as an act of betrayal.

Speaking about social media comments about the decamping, he said, “None caught my attention more than one who posted, suggesting that we declare January 23 annually as World Betrayal Day.

“Therefore, as the leader and grand patron of this movement, I hereby declare that I fully support the declaration,” he said.

Kwankwaso added that the day would henceforth be marked with special events to remind members of what transpired.
