BREAKING: Court Orders Ex-AGF Malami, Wife, Son Be Remanded Prison

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), his wife Bashir Asagbe and son Abubakar Malami, are to be remanded in prison.

This is the ruling of a Federal High Court In Abuja today.

The trial judge, Justice Emeka Nwite ruled that the three be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing and determination of their bail application.

The order came after the court had heard arguments from the defence team led by Joseph Daudu and the prosecution counsel Ekele Iheneacho both Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN)

The trio are facing a 16-count money laundering charge preferred against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and centre on in breach of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act 2011, as amended, and the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022.

Their alleged crimes spanning several years, include the use of companies and bank accounts to launder funds running inot several billions of naira.

The activities cover the retention of cash as collateral for loans, and the acquisition of high-value properties in Abuja, Kano and other locations.

According to the EFCC, some of the offences were committed while Malami was serving as Attorney-General of the Federation.
