Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority sanctions Kenya Airways

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has sanctioned Kenya Airways, a move it says is not to punish the national carrier but to help improve its flight operations.

This comes after series of meetings, including a visit to the NCAA by the Kenyan High Commissioner to Nigeria and officials from the airline, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Kenya Airways.

NCAA director of public affairs and consumer protection Michael Achimugu, revealed these much through a tweet on X on Thursday.

The Eagle reports that the Nigerian authorities had earlier in the year, accused Kenya Airways of violating consumer rights in its Nigerian operations.

It had allegedly abandoned a passenger, Gloria Omisore, who was on a transit flight in Kenya.

“As always, NCAA sanctions are not to punish operators, but to help improve their flight operations, especially regarding the safety and passenger handling protocols”, Achimugu said..

“Kenya Airways has a long-standing relationship with Nigeria, and we look forward to improvements in its Nigerian operations. The sanctions do not diminish the positive aspects of the airline’s operations. This was a case-specific penalty.

“While commending the airline for complying with the determination of the NCAA, we must remind that the timeframe for the resolution of the cases for which this sanction was announced has since elapsed. Therefore, the payment of sanction fines does not conclude the issues.

“The NCAA will follow through and assure passengers and airlines of its commitment to protecting their rights and responsibilities”, he stated.
