High Court Proceedings: Chidinma Ojukwu’s Testimony Over Ataga’s Death

A Lagos State High Court yesterday, heard Chidinma Ojukwu’s testimony of her alleged involvement in the murder of Super TV Chief Executive Officer, Michael Ataga.

Led in evidence by her counsel, Onwuka Egwu, Ojukwu, a 300-level student of the University of Lagos, detailed, how, on that very day of June 16, 2021, she made many attempts to call the late Ataga to no avail.

This she said was despite that a WhatsApp message she had sent earlier to him showed it had been read.

Chidinma testified that she was confused and that when she the gateman, Abu, if he had seen Ataga, she said he replied that Ataga had left the previous day.

She said the gateman later said that Ataga’s car was still parked at the property, and that she thought, and sent a WhatsApp message to the late Ataga, asking him to forgive him for leaving him in the state she did.

She said thereafter, she could not access the line again, as she had been blocked.

According to her, she had two laptops, one Macbook and one HP laptop, which she took to Computer Village on June 18, 2021.

The purpose she said was to repair one and to sell the other.

On what happened when she got to Computer Village, Chidinma told the court that she normally purchased gadgets from the man and that when she handed him the Macbook, that the vendor enquired about the receipt

According to her, she told the vendor that it was a gift, following which the manager, upon coming in, asked her to open unlock the gadget.

Chidinma narrated that after she unlocked the laptop and the vendors had done checking, that  she bidded N600, 000 for it, but that it was later sold for N495, 000

“ He then asked me to sign out of the i-cloud, I signed out and the money was transferred into my bank account, and then I took the HP laptop for repair”.

Chidinma Ojukwu’s testimony: Involvement of her sister, Chioma

Chidinma also provided a background on how her sister, Chioma, the 3^rd defendant in the case came into the picture.

According to her, following her invitation, her sister Chioma visited her from the East,

on June 22, 2021.

She said Chioma had misplaced her phone in April when she travelled to the East, and that when she came to join her in Lagos, she gave her an iPhone 7 Plus she had been using, retaining an iPhone 11

she gave her an iPhone 7 Plus she had used the previous year.

Chidinma Ojukwu’s Testimony: Maltreatment by police

Chidinma told the court that she was arrested by the police on June 23, 2021, and that her father was also arrested, and that they were handcuffed and taken to the Panti police station.

According to her, at the DCP’s office, she narrated what transpired between her and the late Ataga.

She said she told the police that she knew nothing about the Late Ataga’s death; that she had to run with her possessions out of fear.

Chidinma Ojukwu told the court that her father was also handcuffed, and that the police later took them to her residence for a search.

Her phones, laptop, a black disposable bag containing clothes, some documents from the apartment, and ID cards were also confiscated, she narrated.

Writing A Statement And Being Threatened

She Chidinma alleged that she was then taken to a smaller room to write her statement and that her left hand was handcuffed to a chair.

She said when she was given a paper to write a statement by an officer identified as Bamidele, that she said she would not write, that she knew her rights.

And Chidinma said the officer told her that no lawyer was coming and that she would not be allowed to see anyone.

According to her, the officer, Bamidele threatened her to write and that if she refused, that members of her family, including her 10-year-old sister, could be detained. She said because of that, she decided to write, but that after writing the statement, that officer Bamidele tore it.
